| What is Reflexology? |
|
| Reflexology was
practised in the ancient civilisations of China, India and
Egypt as long ago as 2500 BC. However, its introduction to
the West came by Dr Fitzgerald in the States in the early
19th Century. He found that all the organs of the body were
depicted on the feet in zones and actually performed operations
without anaesthetic using zone therapy! In the 1930's Eunice
Ingham further developed this into Reflexology. |
| It is a complementary therapy
whereby all the organs and systems of the body are reflected
on the feet (and hands) and specific pressure applied to these
points triggers a reaction in the relevant part of the body. |
| What can Reflexology
do for me? |
| In a healthy person the body
is in a state of balance but when disease sets in, areas in
the body become blocked thus starving the body of the much
needed energy flow (known as chi in China, prana in India),
vital for sound health. Reflexology aims to increase the circulation
to the whole body but not just on the physical plain; we are
made up of a mind, emotions and spirit too. Thus Reflexology
treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. |
| Reflexologists do not diagnose
or claim cure and there is no substitute for sound medical
advice. However, many symptoms have been alleviated using
Reflexology namely: |
- Migraines/Headaches
- Back/Shoulder pain
- Poor circulation
- High blood pressure
- Hormonal imbalances, for example, Pre Menstrual Tension
- Skin disorders
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome; diarrhoea and constipation
- Insomnia
- Infertility
- Anxiety and the many guises of stress
|
|
| Who can Benefit? |
| Reflexology can be used by all
ages for acute and chronic symptoms but also as a preventative
measure to good health. Stress is present in all our lives
but it is our ability to deal with it that counts. With Reflexology,
we are taking back responsibility for our own health. |
| What happens during
a treatment? |
| After an initial lifestyle/medical
consultation, applied pressure is made to the feet (and sometimes
hands), thus connecting to the whole body and bringing about
homeostasis. It is non-invasive and personal privacy and confidentiality
are both respected. |
| The first treatment lasts approximately
1 ½ hours with subsequent treatments of 1 hour. A course
of treatment will be tailored to individual needs. |
| How will I feel? |
| Most people have a tremendous
feeling of relaxation (essential for healing to begin). Some
can feel tired and tearful or light headed but this is common
and often the beginning of the healing process. It is essential
to increase the intake of fluid post treatment to assist the
body's removal of toxins and waste products. |
"The session yesterday was great
and you'll be pleased to know my stomach feels a lot better
- less gurgling. I really did feel quite refreshed after
- looking forward to the next - wish I could come every
week".
